Knipping Named AE Defensive Player of the Week
BERKELEY – For the fifth time in her career and first time this season, California field hockey goalkeeper Cato Knipping has been named the America East Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Knipping and the Golden Bear defense stymied rival Stanford on Friday, shutting out the Cardinal over four quarters, two overtimes coming out on top after a thrilling shootout to win 1-0.
The native of the Netherlands finished the week with just one save, but it was a crucial one coming in the 70th minute in the first overtime. She came up even bigger in the shootout, stopping the Cardinal's second and fourth attempts to seal the win.
With the win, Knipping secured her eighth career shutout and her 19th career win in front of the cage. The one save gives her 229 for her career. She has 64 saves on the year and is on pace to surpass her career-best of 79 set last season.
Cal (4-8, 3-3 AE) returns to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 1:00 p.m. when James Madison comes to Underhill Field for a non-conference showdown.
