PAC-12 SCHOLAR-ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

SAN FRANCISCO – Stanford's Annabelle Bachmann was named the Pac-12 Women's Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Stanford's Henry Stewart the Pac-12 Men's Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2023 season, the conference office announced Sunday.  Stanford becomes the first school to sweep the rowing scholar-athlete awards since they did it in 2015.  The award, which is presented in each of the 24 sports the Pac-12 sponsors, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes who are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline.

Bachmann, from Ingelheim, Germany, is a biology major who holds a 3.98 grade-point average.  A two-time CRCA National Scholar Athlete and two-time Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll member, the senior was part of the 2022 squad that won the Cardinal's first Pac-12 championship since 2014 thanks to Bachmann's squad winning the Third Varsity Eight race at the event.  In 2021, Stanford were the runners up at the NCAA Championships including a second place finish with Bachmann's boat in the Second Varsity Eight.  A gold medal winner who has competed all over the world as part of Germany's national program, Bachmann has observed surgical procedures, pain management, nerve blockers and inpatient care as an undergraduate research assistant at the Stanford Hospital.  This is the third straight year a Stanford rower has won this award, the first time a school has earned this honor in three straight year since it was created for the 2007-08 academic year and the seventh time a Cardinal has been named Pac-12 Women's Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Stewart, an Indianapolis native, boasts a 3.95 grade-point average with a major in bioengineering.  A two-time IRCA National Scholar Athlete and a two-time Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll member, the senior has raced in the Varsity 8+ boat every year of his Cardinal career.  Helped lead Stanford to a fourth-place finish at the 2022 Pac-12 Championships as part of their varsity eight boat which finished third in that race for the second straight year.  As a team captain this season, led the Cardinal varsity eight squad to a 6-1 record entering the Pac-12 Championships with their only loss coming to the No. 1 ranked Cal team.

In order to be eligible for the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, student-athletes must be a senior (in athletics eligibility), on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50 percent of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum one year in residence at the institution. Each Pac-12 institution may nominate one individual per sport, and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-12 staff members at the conclusion of each sport’s regular season. The athletics accomplishments of the nominees are a consideration in voting for the award.

A Scholar-Athlete of the Year is named in each of the Pac-12’s 24 sponsored sports: baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, beach volleyball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, football, men’s golf, women’s golf, women’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosse, men’s rowing, women’s rowing, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, softball, men’s swimming & diving, women’s swimming & diving, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, men’s track & field, women’s track & field, women’s volleyball, and wrestling.
