Courtney Brown Selected by Washington Spirit in NWSL Draft

Jan 12, 2024

ANAHEIM, Calif. – University of Utah women's soccer midfielder Courtney Brown was picked in the fourth round of the 2024 National Women's Soccer League Draft by the Washington Spirit on Friday evening.

Brown, who served as team captain in each of her last three seasons, put together a collegiate career that included over 90 games played, 14 goals and 15 assists, with the latter number tying her for seventh all-time in program history. The West Haven, Utah native also saw time at several different spots during her time with the Utes, including starting several matches on the back line in 2023. Brown's work in the classroom earned her recognition in the form of four consecutive selections to the Pac-12 Fall Academic Honor Roll and back-to-back spots on the CSC Academic All-District roster.

"We are incredibly happy and proud of Courtney," said head coach Hideki Nakada. "She had to play out of her natural position for us all season but coaches in the league still recognized her quality and I know she will have an opportunity to be an impactful player in the league."

Brown, who was taken with the seventh pick in the fourth round, is the first Ute selected in the NWSL Draft since Lindsey Luke was chosen in the fourth round of the 2016 edition by the Seattle Reign.
