Pac-12 Women's Lacrosse Weekly Rundown - February 21, 2024

The Pac-12 has two teams ranked in the latest IWLCA Top-25: No. 13 USC and No. 20 Colorado. Colorado returns to the top-25 rankings for the first time since the 2023 preseason poll when they entered the season ranked No. 25. USC has been ranked for 30 straight weeks.

Four teams are undefeated on the year, and the league has a combined 15-6 record (not including the UC Davis vs. San Diego State result).

Around the League

  • USC’s (3-0) Claudia Shevitz was named to the 2024 Tewaaraton Award Watch list, which is bestowed to the top male and female college lacrosse players in the country.
  • The Trojans dropped Hofstra, 15-6, to improve to 3-0 on the year, their second 3-0 start to the season in the last three years (also 2022).
  • Colorado (3-0) has won every game this season by one score. 
    • The Buffaloes rank fifth in NCAA DI in clearing percentage at a 97.9 clip.
  • Arizona State (3-0) is off to its best start in program history.
    • The Sun Devils rank t-eighth nationally with 18.67 goals per game, and are outscoring their opponents by an average of 8.33 goals per game. Arizona State also ranks fourth nationally in draw controls per game at 19.33.
  • Oregon (2-0) is t-10th  in NCAA DI in scoring offense with 18.00 goals per game.
    • The Ducks are 2-0 for the first time since 2018. Rachel Pallo set a program record with 11 draw controls in a game in the 17-7 win over St. Francis.
  • Stanford (1-2) earned its first win of the season at Holy Cross this past Monday.
    • The 19 goals scored by the Cardinal are the most in a non-conference game since March 21 when they netted 21 against UAlbany.
  • UC Davis (2-1) defeated San Diego State for its second-straight win. 
    • The Aggies outscored the Aztecs 11-4 in the second half. 
  • Stanford’s Annabel Frist (11.00), USC’s Anna Regan (10.67), and Arizona State’s Zoe Mazur (9.33) are t-second, fourth and eighth, respectively in draw controls per game.

This Week 

  • No. 20 Colorado welcomes No. 4 Northwestern to Kittredge Field on Thursday. 
    • The Buffs defeated the lacrosse powerhouse 11-10 in overtime back in 2017. Northwestern won the 2023 NCAA National Championship for its eighth title all-time.
  • Arizona State faces its toughest test of the season when they visit No. 11 Stony Brook on Friday before hosting No. 6 Michigan on Tuesday.
    • The Seawolves are 2-0 on the young season and averaging 17.50  goals per game.
    • The Wolverines boast the top scoring defense nationally at 3.00 goals per game.
  • California (1-2) returns home to host Lindenwood on Friday.
    • The Golden Bears dropped both contests last weekend amid cold and snowy weather conditions on the East Coast.
  • No. 13 USC hosts No. 6 Michigan on Saturday in its second top-25 game this season.
    • USC is 71-18 all-time in home games, and are 3-0 all-time against Michigan. 
  • Stanford begins its three-game homestand on Saturday against Vanderbilt.
    • The two teams have split their last 12 matchups, however the Cardinal has won the last two over the Commodores. 
  • The Ducks wrap up their homestand on Sunday against Marist. Oregon has won four of five all-time against the Red Foxes.
  • San Diego State (1-2) is set to face its first ranked opponent of 2024 in No. 10 Denver on Sunday.
    • Goalie Avery Dyer leads the Pac-12 in saves with 29, and is second in the country with 16.00 saves per game.
    • Her 19 saves against UC Davis are the most in a game by a DI player this season.
  • UC Davis takes on Lindenwood (Sunday) and St. Bonaventure (Tuesday) at home.
    • The Aggies are 1-0 so far this season at UC Davis Health Stadium, and are 1-0 all-time against Lindenwood. 

Preseason Coaches Poll

  • USC was selected first in the 2024 Pac-12 Women’s Lacrosse preseason coaches poll. The defending regular season and tournament champion garnered 48 total points and six first-place votes, while Stanford was picked to finish second with 44 points and two first-place selections. 

Returners & Additions

  • The Pac-12 returns 13 postseason All-Conference honorees from a season ago, including reigning Pac-12 Midfielder of the Year Claudia Shevitz, the 2023 Pac-12 Co-Goalkeeper of the Year Kait Devir, and Reigning Freshman of the Year Teagan NG.
  • The Conference welcomes seven standouts featured on ILWomen’s Class of 2023 Power 100 Incoming Freshmen Rankings: Stanford Aliya Polisky - No. 14, A, Stanford; Lindsey Devir - No. 16, M, Stanford; Ava Arceri - No. 24, M, Stanford; Shae Lembo - No. 32, G, Stanford; Anna Colpack - No. 54, M, Stanford; Ellie Johnson - No. 71, D, Stanford; Anna Regan - No. 86, M, USC.

2024 Pac-12 Tournament   

  • The 2024 Pac-12 Tournament is set for May 1-4 at the LA Memorial Coliseum. The event will consist of a six team, single-elimination tournament format, and the tournament field will be based on regular-season conference record. All five contests are slated to broadcast on Pac-12 Network and the Pac-12 Now app. .
