Sun Devils sweep day one of the 2024 Pac-12 Men's Swimming Championships
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – With No. 17 USC leading the way after the conclusion of the Men’s Diving Championships last weekend, the road to crowning a Pac-12 Men’s Swimming & Diving Champion picked back up in Federal Way Wednesday night.
No. 1 ARIZONA STATE started things out with a bang as they secured a new NCAA record in the 200 Medley Relay, and a Pac-12 record in the 800 Free Relay to put the Devils in fourth place after day one.
No. 23 ARIZONA, No. 6 STANFORD and No. 2 CALIFORNIA all earned podium finishes with the Cardinal picking up two on the night.
200 Medley Relay:
- To kick off the 2024 Pac-12 Men’s Swimming Championships, the Arizona State Sun Devils set a new NCAA record in the 200 Medley, swimming a 1:20.55 for the fastest time in college history.
- Blazing past the previous NCAA record was Jack Dolan, Leon Marchand, Ilya Kharun and Jonny Kulow who topped the NCAA, Pac-12 and Arizona State record books, swimming just .12 seconds faster than the previous college record.
- Coming in behind the Devils were the Arizona Wildcats who finished with the fastest time in school history. Ryan Purdy, Ryan Foote, Seth Miller and Tommy Palmer swam a 1:22.90 to secure the second place finish.
- Rounding out third in the first event of the Championship was STANFORD’s Rex Maurer, Ron Polonsky, Rafael Gu and Jonathon Tan who surpassed their season best with a time of 1:23.14.
800 Freestyle Relay:
- Sun Devil Leon Marchand kicked off the 800 Free Relay with a 1:30.43 split that topped the country this season. Patrick Sammon, Owen McDonald and Julian Hill followed in suit with a 6:06.14 final that set a new Pac-12 and Pac-12 Championship record.
- Shaving two seconds off their season best was Stanford’s Andres Cabrera Dupont, Andrei Minakov, Luke Maurer and Henry McFadden, taking second after swimming a 6:10.08.
- No. 2 California saw their first podium finish of the Championship after Robin Hanson, Keaton Jones, Dylan Hawk and Trent Frandson swam a 6:10.53 third place finish.
