Arizona State captures back-to-back Pac-12 Men's Swimming Championships

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The No. 1 ARIZONA STATE Sun Devils secured their second consecutive Pac-12 Championship title after a runaway finish with 1036 total points. 

After winning 16 of the Championships’ 18 events, with 31 total podium finishes, the Sun Devils took first by over 303 points with their total points marking the second-highest in conference history (California - 1995). 

The top team in the country swept three events (200 IM, 50 Free and 200 Breast), blazing through the record books, setting two NCAA records, four Pac-12 all around records and five Pac-12 Championship meet records.  

No. 6 STANFORD took second with 733 points and No. 2 CALIFORNIA followed in third place with 595 points.

1650 Free:

  • Swimming the fastest time in the country this season and setting a new Pac-12 record was ASU sophomore Zalan Sarkany with a time of 14:23.01.
  • The sophomore shaved a whole 10 seconds off the three-year old Championship meet record and broke an all-around record that has been held strong for 12 years. 
  • Freshman Trojan Krzysztof Chmielewski touched the podium for the first time in his career after swimming an NCAA B Standard 14:39.64 followed closely by Sun Devil Daniel Matheson at 14:39.64.

200 Back 

  • Going four-for-four in the Championships was Sun Devil Hubert Kos who swam a new NCAA record in the 200 Back. The 1:35.69 time trumped the previous NCAA record by .04 seconds and blazed past the Sun Devil’s personal-best school record of 1:36.54. 
  • Kos is the first Sun Devil to be crowned the 200 back champion, and he takes down Ryan Murphy’s eight-year record to claim possession of the NCAA, American and U.S. Open record. 
  • Following closely behind Kos for the second time of the Championship was Owen McDonald who swam a 1:37.70, an NCAA A Standard.
  • Rounding out third in the event was freshman Cardinal Rex Maurer who swam a 1:39.83.

100 Free:

  • California’s Matthew Jensen became just the second athlete of the Championship to upset Arizona State and knock them out of the first-place spot after swimming a 41.63 in the 100 free, just .03 faster than the nearest Devil. 
  • ASU’s Jack Dolan took an extremely close second place finish after swimming a 41.66 with his fellow Sun Devil Patrick Sammon finishing just .10 seconds after him in third (41.77). 

200 Breast:

  • Two-time defending Champion Leon Marchand continued the legacy by picking up his third win in the event with the fastest time in the country this season. 
  • The junior’s 1:48.60 made him the sole swimmer to complete the event in under 1:49, and earned him his ninth Pac-12 Championship title. 
  • After capturing two podium finishes early in the Championships, Sun Devil David Schlicht tacked on a third, swimming a 1:51.62 to close out the 2024 Championship season. 
  • Completing the third Sun Devil sweep of the competition was sophomore Cale Martter who swam his way to his first podium finish with a time of 1:52.19.

200 Fly:

  • The final individual win of the Championship was captured by freshman Ilya Kharun who won his second title of the week. His 1:38.64 earned him an NCAA A Standard and the final title of his freshman season.
  • Taking second in Sun Devil fashion was senior Alex Colson who saw the podium for the first time this week with a 1:40.78 NCAA B Standard swim.
  • Closing out the individual competition was Arizona sophomore Haako Naughton who found his way into third after swimming a 1:41.67.

400 Free Relay:

  • With their 16th, and final, win of the 2024 Pac-12 Championships, Sun Devils Leon MarchandJack Dolan, Ilya Kharun and Jonny Kulow swam a 2:44.23 Pac-12 Championship meet record to lock in the 300 point win. 
  • A whole four seconds behind the Devils was Dylan HawkMatthew Jensen, Liam Bell and Keaton Jones who captured their third relay podium finish in 2:48.31 to end their Championship run. 
  • Capping out the top-3 in the 400 Free Relay was Stanford’s Luke MaurerRafael GuRon Polonsky and Henry McFadden swimming a 2:48.62. 
     

Swimmer of the Meet:

  • For the third year in a row Junior Sun Devil Leon Marchand took home Swimmer of the Meet after going 7-for-7 in the Championship.
  • The 3x winner contributed 220 total points between his three individual and four relay wins.
