Turner Breaks Own Program Record At Texas Relays

Mar 28, 2024
Amari Turner improved her outdoor PR to 4.35m (14-3.25), a full two inches above Cal's No. 2 all-time mark.

AUSTIN, Texas – Two representatives from California track & field started off competition for the Golden Bears on Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium, as senior Amari Turner and sophomore Loreal Wilson became the first duo of the weekend to wear the Blue & Gold at the 96th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays presented by Truist.

Turner, competing in the women's collegiate pole vault, took home her second event crown of the season with a clearance of 4.35m (14-3.25); that mark, second best in Division I this year, also reset Turner's own program record for the second time.

It did not come easy – after passing on the 3.85m (12-7.5) opening height, Turner missed her first attempt on each subsequent bar, taking two passes apiece at 4.00m (13-1.5), 4.15m (13-7.25) and 4.25m (13-11.25) before reaching 4.35m as one of seven vaulters remaining. In the end, she was the only one to lay claim to that mark, fouling on her first two jumps before finding success on her third.

"I didn't do anything different (on my last attempt) – I just had to trust my jump and rely on my technique," Turner said.

Over on the track, Wilson placed 15th out of 51 in the 400m hurdles timed final, crossing the finish line in 1:02.75.
