No. 9 Bears Bash No. 26 Huskies
SEATTLE – Katja Wiersholm clinched the ninth-ranked California women's tennis team's 5-2 win at 26th-ranked Washington on Friday, with the Seattle-area product defeating Alexia Jacobs in straight sets at court-two singles at Quillian Tennis Stadium.
The Golden Bears improved to 15-4 (7-1 Pac-12) with their third consecutive victory. The Huskies are 15-8 (4-4).
The 42nd-ranked Wiersholm, who hails from Kirkland, Washington, beat the 88th-ranked Jacobs, 6-4, 6-1.
The Bears trailed heading into singles. Wiersholm and Jessica Alsola claimed the first win of the day for the Bears, besting Erika Matsuda and Dariya Detkovskaya, 6-2, on court two. But losses on court one and three handed the doubles point to the Huskies.
Cal junior Lan Mi quickly tied the match at 1-1 when she beat Detkovskaya, 6-0, 6-2, at court-six singles. The 72nd-ranked Alsola followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Astrid Olsen on court three, and then Berta Passola Folch beat Sarah-Maude Forton, 6-1, 6-2, on court five to push the lead to 3-1. Wiersholm secured the overall victory and gave Cal a 4-1 lead with her fourth clinching win of the season. She also improved to 24-5 in singles.
The teams split the last two matches – Cal's 39th-ranked Hannah Viller Moeller edged Erika Matsuda, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(6), while first-year Bear Mao Mushika fell to Melissa Sakar, 7-6, 7-5 – to produce the 5-2 final score.
"We did a good job today," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "When we were here last time we played indoors (in a 4-1 Cal win in February), but we were able to play outside today. We didn't start as quickly as we could have in the doubles, but once we started singles, we did a good job of taking control and closing out the match. We played very well in singles, and the cool part is we get to do it again tomorrow."
Cal plays at Washington State at 11 a.m. PT on Saturday.
