Hamilton Named Pac-12 Men’s Field Athlete Of The Week

Apr 23, 2024
Rowan Hamilton is now the all-time No. 8 collegiate performer in the men's hammer throw.

The Pac-12 Conference announced Tuesday that California track & field's Rowan Hamilton is its Men's Field Athlete of the Week, following his standout performance at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 20.

Hamilton, who transferred this past offseason from British Columbia to pursue a graduate certificate at Cal, was the Golden Bears' top entry in the men's elite hammer throw section. He won the competition with his final throw, which sailed a personal-best 77.16m (253-2) and surpassed his own program record by 11 feet. That mark also made him the current season's NCAA leader, the No. 8 all-time collegiate performer and the No. 9 man in the world this year. Hamilton is already the fourth-best Canadian male in hammer throwing history; his season to date has included two school records (hammer and indoor weight throw), a meet record (Brutus Hamilton Invitational – hammer) and a second-team All-America nod (indoor weight throw).

"Rowan performed at a very high level this weekend," assistant coach Mohamad Saatara said. "This is a great indicator of his abilities as we move toward the championship season."

Hamilton is Cal's third Pac-12 Athlete of the Week honoree this year, joining fellow seniors Mason Mangum (Men's Field, March 19) and Amari Turner (Women's Field, March 19). He will step back into the ring for the Bears on Tuesday, April 30, at the 129th Big Meet at Stanford.
