Record-Setting Relay Plus Ault Win Pac-12 Honors

Apr 30, 2024

SEATTLE – Washington Track & Field continues to race past its record for most Pac-12 weekly honors in a season, as the Huskies earned No. 6 and No. 7 today. The conference named the Husky women's 4x800-meter relay squad its Women's Track Athletes of the Week, and javelin thrower Chandler Ault took the Men's Field Athlete of the Week award.

This is the third time this season that the Dawgs have won multiple awards in one week. Previously, the most honors that Washington won in one season was four, and that came just last year. Three was the standard prior to 2023, set multiple times.

On Saturday at hallowed Franklin Field, the Husky women's 4x800-meter relay broke the NCAA Record en route to its first victory ever at the Penn Relays. The foursome of Marlena Preigh, Wilma Nielsen, Samantha Friborg, and Chloe Foerster ran 8:17.28 in the Championship of America event, breaking Villanova's 2013 mark by 0.17 seconds.

It's the second collegiate record of the year for the UW women in a relay, as the Huskies broke their own NCAA DMR record indoors in February, with a group that included Preigh and Foerster.

Chandler Ault won the javelin at the Fresno State Invitational on Saturday with the No. 2 mark in school history, the top mark in the Pac-12 this season and the No. 7 mark in the NCAA this year. Ault threw 251-1 on his third attempt, coming within a couple feet of Kyle Nielsen's 2011 School Record of 253-5. Ault's second-best throw was also beyond his former PR, as he threw 245-10 in the second round.

Ault is the first Husky men's thrower to win the Pac-12 Field Athlete of the Week honor since Jonah Wilson in 2019. Ida Eikeng, a heptathlete, won women's Field AOW in 2021 for javelin and shot put marks.

Washington is off this week preparing for the Pac-12 Championships, which are May 10-12 in Boulder, Colo.
