Colorado Throwers to Highlight Air Force Twilight Open

May 2, 2024

BOULDER – As the Buffaloes continue to prepare for the Pac-12 Championships next week, the Colorado men's and women's track and field teams are sending several athletes to the Air Force Academy on Friday to compete in the Air Force Twilight Open.

The meet will occur over one day at the Cadet Outdoor Track Complex. Events will begin at 10 a.m. with the day's final event starting shortly after 4 p.m.

The group to represent the Buffs will mostly consist of throwers. A total of 12 Colorado athletes, six men and six women, will be split between the hammer, discus, javelin and shot put events.

Some Buffs are set to compete in multiple events while others are competing just once throughout the day. Matt Ward, Lucas Williams and Lars Atkinson will all showcase their skills in the discus and hammer throw on the men's side. Ward is coming off an amazing performance at the Desert Heat Classic in Arizona where he broke his own Colorado school record in the hammer throw. He'll look to lead the Buffs in the event on Friday.

Also competing in multiple events is Amanda Opp on the women's side. She will compete in the discus and hammer throw as well. Other women throwers making the trip to Air Force include Isabella Braun, Alaina Fantaski, Obi Osafo-Mensah, Lauren Whyrick and Meghan Whyrick.

Closing out the group heading down to the Cadet Outdoor Track Complex are Isaiah Bouchard, Ames Newman, Gustavo Alfonso and Johnny Homsy. Homsy will be the only Buff sprinter to make the trip, competing in the 100-meter at 3:05 p.m.

The Air Force Twilight Open will be Colorado's last meet before the outdoor postseason begins. The Pac-12 Championships will take place in Boulder on May 10-12 followed by the NCAA West Preliminaries in Fayetteville, Ark. on May 22-25 and the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. on June 6-9.
