Lindquist Podiums at Pac-12 Championships Opening Day

BOULDER, Colo. – The Washington State track and field team competed in the opening day of the 2024 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships, Friday, May 10, at Potts Field in Boulder, Colorado. Four Cougar student-athletes advanced to event finals, headlined by sophomore Laura Lindquist taking third place in women's javelin with a personal-best 50.45 meters, the sixth-longest throw in WSU women's history.
 
In the men's decathlon, graduate student Mason Mahacek grabbed two 1st-place finishes, including a high jump of 2.03m for 831 points and the top time of 48.66 seconds in the 400m race. Mahacek currently sits second in the decathlon with 3,982 points, just 107 points out of the lead with four events remaining on Saturday.
 
Sophomore sprinter Mason Lawyer clinched a spot in Sunday's 200m finals with a 21.25 time in the preliminary heat to qualify in eighth. The men's 200m final is scheduled for 2:50 p.m. MT (1:50 p.m. PT). Jared McAlvey will join Lawyer on Sunday after qualifying out of the 400m hurdle preliminary heats. The Walla Walla senior raced to a 51.15 time, the 5th-fastest prelim time and into the final, Sunday at 2:37 p.m. MT (1:37 p.m. PT).

In the final event of the opening day, graduate student Brian Barsaiya scored for the Cougars in the 10,000m race. Barsaiya finished with a strong kick, grabbing fourth place away from a Husky competitor, with a time of 29:46.80.

Men's javelin thrower Blake Sturgis also earned a spot in his final, heaving a 59.04m throw to qualify and ultimately earn a 9th-place finish.
 
In the women's heptathlon, Sarah Kovich clocked a 15.04 in the 100m hurdles, adding points in the shot put with a 10.34m mark. Through four events, Kovich has 2,082 points and will conclude the heptathlon Saturday afternoon at Potts Field on the University of Colorado campus.
 
The Cougs also concluded competition in the 1500-meter races, the long jump, and the 10,000-meter race. The second day of action at the 2024 Pac-12 Championship begins Saturday, May 11, in the early afternoon with the conclusion of the heptathlon and decathlon. Saturday will also see medals awarded in the 3000m steeplechase, men's hammer throw, men's pole vault, women's high jump and shot put.
 
The finals of the men's hammer throw and steeplechase events will be televised live regionally across the Pac-12 Network and online at pac-12.com.
