Wildcats Ready for NCAA West First Round Championships

May 21, 2024

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arizona Track and Field begins this week's first round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Arkansas will host the NCAA West First-Round Championships at John McDonnell Field from Wednesday to Saturday.

The first round of the outdoor championships includes two competitions, one in the West region and one in the East, and features the top 48 athletes in each event and the top 24 relay teams. The top 12 finishers in each region will punch their ticket to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 5-8. 24 individual Wildcats and two relay teams qualified for this week's West Region Championships.

Each day of competition alternates between men's and women's events, with the men competing on Wednesday and Friday and the women competing on Thursday and Saturday. Both Wednesday and Thursday have identical schedules with the field events starting at 8:00 a.m. MST and track events beginning at 4:00 p.m. MST. Friday and Saturday have identical schedules with field events beginning at 11:00 a.m. MST and track events starting at 3:00 p.m. MST. All four days of the competition can be streamed on ESPN+ ($).

The running events at the regional competitions are classified as First Round and Quarterfinals, with the Semifinals and Finals occurring at the NCAA Championships (besides a select number of distance events). Additionally, throwing events are considered First Round events and each competitor will only have three attempts to qualify for the finals.

"We have a great opportunity for success in this first round of the NCAA Championships," said Head Coach Fred Harvey. "It's the NCAAs and you have the best of the best competing. The West is the most competitive of the two regions, and we have a legitimate opportunity to move on over half of the 24 athletes competing here in Fayetteville."

At the Wildcats' last competition, the Pac-12 Championships, both the men and women finished sixth overall. The competition featured several impressive individual performances headlined by Emma Gates winning the women's high jump and Sir Jonathan Sims winning the men's triple jump. The pair, who are both sophomores, each earned their first career conference victory.

The Wildcats as a team had eight podium finishers, 24 individual scorers, four relay scorers, nine all-time top 10 marks in school history, and numerous personal bests at the final Pac-12 Championships. Other podium finishers included Zachary Extine in the men's 110m hurdles, Paris Mikinski in the women's high jump, Jared O'Riley in the men's javelin, Antonia Sanchez Nunez in the women's 400m hurdles, Sydnie Vanek in the women's long jump, and Trayvion White-Austin, James Onanubosi, Brian Limage, and Tyson Tippett in the men's 4x100m relay.

At last year's NCAA West First Round Championships, seven individual Wildcats and one relay team punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships. Returners who will have a chance to advance for the second straight year include Tapenisa Havea, Jared O'Riley, and 3/4 of the men's 4x100m relay team.

A meet recap will be posted here detailing the competition results. Live updates will also be posted to @ArizonaTrack on X.
