McAlvey, Paredes Advance to Friday’s Quarterfinals

May 22, 2024

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Jared McAlvey captured the first heat of the 400m Hurdles to automatically qualify for Friday's quarterfinal round to highlight Washington State's opening day at the 2024 NCAA West Preliminary Round Wednesday at John McDonnell Field.

After capturing the 2024 Pac-12 400m Hurdles title two weeks ago, McAlvey was in control every step of the way in his heat. The Cougar senior led coming off the final turn and cruised across the final line in a time of 51.02 seconds, advancing to the NCAA quarterfinal round for the second-straight season.

Also advancing to Friday's quarterfinals is sophomore John Paredes in the 110m Hurdles.  Running in the sixth heat, Paredes finished strong from the outer lanes to cross the line in 13.57 seconds, third in the heat and 14th overall to automatically qualify for the quarterfinals.

Competing in his first NCAA Championship First Round, sophomore javelin thrower Blake Sturgis opened the day with a throw of 62.90m / 206' 4" to finish fifth in flight 1 and 32nd overall. Junior Ronald Grueso Mosquera, making his third appearance at the NCAA Championship First Round, finished fourth in his shot put flight and 23rd overall with a championship-best throw of 17.80m / 58' 4.75".

On the track, freshman Grant Buckmiller completed his first NCAA postseason appearance as he finished his 400m race sixth in the third heat at46.37 seconds, 29th overall. Graduate student Brian Barsaiya concluded his Cougar career with an amazing race in the 10,000m. Barsaiya entered the event with the 35th-best time in the field and finished the race with a 16th-place showing, narrowly missing a top-12 showing which would have advanced him to the NCAA Championship site. He was also the top finisher among all Pac-12 entrants

Junior Ben Chappell concluded the first day for WSU with a 31st-place showing in the hammer throw. Chappell's best throw of 61.38m / 201' 4", was good for 12th in the second flight.
