After leading the Cal Bears to a Pac-8 co-championship in 1975, quarterback Joe Roth was considered an early Heisman Trophy candidate entering the '76 season. But after being diagnosed with melanoma midway through the year, Roth continued to play and tragically died shortly after the end of the season at the age of 21.
