Week three of Pac-12 play saw No. 3 Stanford extend its league winning streak to 24 straight dating back to last season after finishing out its weekend road slate with a hard-fought top-five win at No. 4 Washington State. Despite the loss by the Cougars, the top five of the AVCA Poll remained unchanged with Stanford staying at No. 3, Washington State at No. 4 and Oregon at No. 5, marking the latest in the season the Pac-12 has had three top-five teams since 2014. Meanwhile the Sun Devils, who are just one of six teams in the country with one or fewer losses, moved into the top 20 in the poll after ASU's first weekend sweep of the LA schools since 2010. No. 19 Arizona State will travel to the Pacific Northwest for matches at Oregon State and the league's lone ranked matchup of week four, a Sunday showdown at No. 5 Oregon live on Pac-12 Oregon at 12 p.m. PT.

LAST WEEK

  • With the wins at Washington and No. 4 Washington State last weekend, the Cardinal not only extended a Pac-12 winning streak to 24, which dates back to last season when they fell to Oregon on the first weekend of conference play on Sept. 25, 2022, they also kept their road record on the season perfect at 9-0. Stanford swept the Pac-12 Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards after the big weekend. Senior Caitie Baird earned her fourth career offensive honor after hitting .486 with 18 kills on 35 swings with just one error in the win over the Cougars, while senior Elena Oglivie picked up her seventh career defensive nod with a season-high 27 digs - one off her career high - at WSU.
  • Prior to the tough loss to the Cardinal, No. 4 Washington State had started the weekend with a dominant 3-0 sweep against California, extending its winning streak to 14 before that came to an end against Stanford. While the Cardinal ultimately won 3-1, the match was much closer than the score would indicate as the first two sets went to 31-29 and 29-27, respectively with only a matter of points ultimately deciding the match. At 15-2, WSU's only two losses this season have been against top-three ranked foes.
  • No. 5 Oregon took care of business at the Mountain schools, dispatching Colorado (3-0) and Utah (3-1) to improve the Ducks' road record to 7-0 in 2023.
  • Then-No. 23 Arizona State put an end to USC's nine-match winning streak, taking down the Trojans in a thrilling five-setter in Tempe to open the weekend. The Sun Devils followed it up with a 3-0 sweep over the Bruins, their first sweep over UCLA since 2009, to mark just the third time in program history ASU had beat both LA schools on the same weekend (first since 2010). The performances helped Arizona State climb four spots in the rankings to No. 19, its highest ranking since 2015.
  • Washington split the weekend with a loss to No. 3 Stanford and a win over the Bears. UW's Kierstyn Barton garnered her first Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors after averaging 3.67 kills per set on .250 hitting and 4.0 points per set across the two matches, which included leading all Huskies with 15 kills on .294 hitting against the Cardinal.
  • Arizona, Colorado, Utah and USC all managed to split their weekends as well. The Buffs and Utes each picked up their wins over Oregon State to go along with their defeats to the Ducks, while Arizona notched its first Pac-12 win after taking down UCLA to start the weekend and USC bounced back from its loss to ASU to best Arizona.
  • Oregon State, California and UCLA were the three Pac-12 squads to come up empty on the weekend.

  • For a second consecutive week, the three in the top-10 and the four squads in the top 15 are the most of any conference in the nation.
  • Stanford moved up to No. 2 after the win in Pullman, with Washington State at No. 5, Oregon at No. 8 and Arizona State at No. 13.
  • Washington is the next highest Pac-12 team at No. 30 with USC and California close behind at No. 40 and No. 42, respectively.
  • UCLA sits at No. 59, Colorado at No. 64, Utah at No. 74, Arizona at No. 88 and Oregon State at No. 191.

FOUR IN LATEST AVCA TOP 25

  • For the third straight week, four Pac-12 teams appeared in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coaches Top 25 poll with all four in the top 20 now. The three in the top-five remained unchanged - No. 3 Stanford, No. 4 Washington State and No. 5 Oregon - while Arizona State moved up four spots to No. 19, the Sun Devils' third straight week in the poll after entering the top 25 for the first time since 2018.
  • The three top-10 teams for the Pac-12 are the most of any conference in the nation.
  • The Pac-12 has three teams in the top five for the second straight week. This is the latest in the season three Pac-12 teams have appeared in the top five since Oregon was 2, Washington was 3 and USC was 5 on October 1, 2012.
  • The Cardinal held down the No. 3 spot after the big road wins at Washington and No. 4 Washington State.
  • Washington State was not punished for its close home loss to the Cardinal, remaining at 4 and still the highest ranking in program history, which bested the previous high of No. 5 back in October of 1995. After starting the season at No. 17, the Cougars have made the biggest jump of any team this season, moving up 13 spots over the first seven weeks. The week-three jump from No. 11 to No. 7 was the Cougars' first time in the top 10 since 2016.
  • Oregon also stayed solid in the No. 5 spots after dominant road wins at Colorado and Utah.
  • With its sweep over the LA schools over the weekend, ASU continued to rise for a third straight week, moving up four spots to crack the top 20 at No. 19.
  • USC, despite the road loss to the Trojans, continued to receive votes with 45 this week.

NEW COACHING FACES

Half the league has a new face on the sideline as the Pac-12 will have six new head coaches in 2023 - two of which are alums of the programs they are taking over.

  • Arizona: Charita Stubbs, who played at Arizona from 1992-94, takes over after the retirement of longtime head coach Dave Rubio. Stubbs was the first player in Arizona history to record 300 kills, 300 digs and 100 blocks in one season and helped the program to back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances.
  • Arizona State: JJ Van Niel comes to Tempe after servicing as an assistant coach and associate head coach at Utah and USC for the past eight years.
  • California: Crissy Jones Schoonderwoerd takes over as the interim head coach after former head man Sam Crosson resigned in July. Jones Schoonderwoerd is no stranger to the Pac-12 as she was an AVCA All-American and a three-time All-Pac-12 performer at Washington (2014-17), helping the Huskies to a pair of Elite Eight appearances.
  • Oregon State: Lindsey Behonick is new to the Pac-12 but brings a wealth of experience after serving as an assistant coach at Pittsburgh for the last 10 years. Pitt is fresh off back-to-back Final Four appearances and Behonick helped the program win four ACC Championships and compile a 258-62 record during her time there.
  • UCLA: After helping guide San Diego to a Final Four appearance last season as an assistant coach, Alfee Reft becomes just the fourth Bruin head coach in UCLA history. He previously served as an assistant coach at Illinois and Minnesota and currently serves as a season assistant coach for the U.S. Women’s National Team.
  • Washington: Leslie Gabriel is the other alum to take over the program where she played. From 1995-1998 Gabriel was one of the best blockers in Pac-12 history and is third all-time in the Huskies’ record book with 613. Gabriel will get the chance to lead the Huskies after being on UW’s staff through multiple head coaches since 2001, helping the Huskies to 21 straight NCAA tournament appearances and the 2005 National Championship.
