Sun Devil Tennis Falls in NCAA Opening Round

Tuscaloosa, AL - The No. 25 ASU women's tennis team fell in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Women's Tennis Division I Tennis Championship to Princeton, 4-3, on Friday afternoon in Tuscaloosa, AL.

"It was a really good match and we certainly had our chances to win," ASU head coach Sheila McInerney said. "But we have to give Princeton credit as they battled like champs."

Arizona State started the match off with the momentum, picking up the doubles point to start the day. After dropping the first match on the No. 2 court, the pairings of Desirae Krawczyk/Leighann Sahagun and Ebony Panoho/Alexandra Osborne battled back picking up a two-point swing and giving ASU the early lead.

Singles play proved just as tough for the Sun Devils -- the senior-less ASU squad took three different singles matches to three sets each.

Arizona State picked up singles wins on the No. 4 and No. 5 courts, bringing their total to three overall points, falling one short of victory. Leighann Sahagun defeated Sivan Krems 7‐6 (7‐1), 7‐5. Ebony Panoho defeated Dorothy Tang 6-1, 5-7, 7-5.

The loss brings the 2014 team season to an end, although members of the team will continue to compete in the coming days. Sophomore Desirae Krawczyk will compete in the singles tournament after the conclusion of the team tournament.

"Hopefully the loss hurts enough to work hard over the summer and make sure we don't have this feeling next year," McInerney said.
