Kevin Hogan, Michael Rector combine for great catch on broken play

Sep 6, 2014

USC's defense caused Stanford all kinds of trouble in Saturday's 13-10 Trojans win including this play, which is essentially stifled.

Cardinal quarterback Kevin Hogan goes through his reads without finding an open throw, then bobbles the ball before scrambling to his right.

Good thing receiver Michael Rector hadn't given up on the play. He runs the sideline to give Hogan a way out of a broken play. Credit Hogan with putting the ball only where Rector can catch it, but moreso credit the receiver for making a the grab. Not only was his vision impaired with USC defender Gerald Bowman breaking on the long throw, but Rector caught the ball after it was tipped by Bowman.

Overcoming all those obstacles to make a 25-yard catch warrants another look even if Stanford couldn't turn big plays into points in the loss.
