Stanford’s Samuelson Named Player of the Week

UCLA’s Canada Selected Freshman of the Week

SAN FRANCISCO - STANFORD’s Bonnie Samuelson was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, while UCLA’s Jordin Canada was tabbed the Freshman of the Week, as announced by the Conference on Monday.

Senior forward Bonnie Samuelson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) powered No. 16 Stanford to two victories last week over UC Davis, 71-59, and UC Santa Barbara, 90-34. Against UC Davis, the senior sunk six three-pointers and went 8-of-13 from the field, scoring 30 points. Her six threes tied her previous career high and made her the first Stanford player not named Ogwumike to score 30 points in a game since Jeanette Pohlen poured in 31 against Connecticut on Dec. 30, 2010. Samuelson followed that game up with a trio of three-pointers in the win over UC Davis in just 15 minutes played.  On the week, Samuelson averaged 19.5 points and made 9-of-15 attempts from behind the arc (.600).

UCLA guard Jordin Canada (Los Angeles, Calif.) earns Freshman of the Week honors after scoring a season-high 16 points in the 82-67 loss to No. 4 Notre Dame. It was the third-straight game she had scored in double figures (longest active streak on the team), which included 12 points against No. 2 Connecticut (Dec. 21) and 12 points in the win over Samford (Dec. 19). Canada finished 7-of-15 from the field against the Fighting Irish and also grabbed four rebounds, dished out two assists and snagged two steals.

A player of the week has been selected every week since 1986-87, the first year the Conference sponsored women’s sports. A freshman of the week was first selected in 2012-13.

Stanford will play its first Conference game of the season on Saturday Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. PT at home against Colorado. UCLA opens up on the road at crosstown-rival USC on Tuesday Dec. 30 at 6 p.m. PT.
