USC leads after day one of Pac-12 men's golf championships

Apr 27, 2015

PULLMAN, Wash.-- USC holds a six-stroke lead over the competition and is the only team under par at the conclusion of second round of play on day one of the Pac-12 Men’s Golf Championship at Washington State University’s Palouse Ridge Golf Course in Pullman.

Four USC golfers shot under par in second round as the Trojans posted a second round score of 6-under to lead the Pac-12 Championship at the midway point with a 1-under 699.

“We came out with a bunch of birdies to start the second round which got us in a good position,” USC Coach Zambri said. “I think everybody contributed, and we didn't even count our number one in the lineup. Our five and six guys shot four under total, so that's huge.”

STANFORD sophomore Maverick McNealy leads the individual competition. McNealy was tied for the lead with OREGON freshman Aaron Wise after the first round, then posted a 2-under 68 to increase his lead to a two-round total of 7-under 133 (65-68).

“It took every bit of my concentration," McNealy said. "It is a grind, but our team’s action plan worked. We worked really hard in the gym and had a good 36-hole day. It's fun to be in the mix of things so we have a shot on the final day."

WASHINGTON STATE freshman Derek Bayley used his home course knowledge to fire a 6-under 134 (69-65) and put himself just one shot off the lead. Oregon’s Wise (65-70) is now tie for third with OREGON STATE senior Alex Franklin (68-67) at 5-under 135. Washington State’s Michael Anderson rounds out the top 5, shooting a 137 (67-70) on the day.

ARIZONA STATE led the team race after the first round with a 4-over 354, with USC close behind at 5-over 355. Both teams had four individual players in the top 20 through the first round. There were four eagles shot in the first round, including three by Oregon golfers, helping the Ducks to a third place 7-over 357 finish in day one. Despite the benign weather conditions, the course proved to be a challenge with only ten golfers finishing under par.

The third round will begin Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. PT. The Championships will conclude with the final round on Wednesday beginning at 7:30 a.m. PT.
