STANFORD, Calif. – No. 20 Stanford fell to California 1-0, Saturday night at Cagan Stadium.

The loss does not count towards the Pac-12 standings.

Stanford had a chance to tie the match at 87:29 when Civana Kuhmann was taken down in the box, setting up a penalty kick opportunity. Bears keeper Angelina Anderson was able to get a hand on the shot to deflect it back into play and keep the Cardinal off the board.  

With the first half winding to a close, California scored on a shot from Mia Fontana in the 43rd minute. Fontana's shot went right past the outstretched hands of Katie Meyer and ricocheted off the left post into the net.

Stanford had 21 shots, nine on goal, and 13 corner kicks on the night.

The Cardinal will be back in remain at home next weekend, hosting Oregon State on Friday, and Oregon on Sunday. The match against the Ducks will be considered a nonconference match.
