May 13, 2021

TEMPE - The Pac-12 Championships are finally here.

Arizona State heads to Los Angeles this weekend to compete at the 2021 Pac-12 Championships, hosted by Southern California. Competition runs Friday-Sunday at Katherine B. Loker Stadium. No fans will be permitted at the championships, but the entirety of the championships will be streamed and broadcasted via Pac-12.com and Pac-12 Networks, with live results here.

The meet kicks off Friday at 10 a.m. PDT with the men's and women's hammer before taking a few hours break and restarting at 4:30 with the 1500m and men's and women's javelin. Saturday's field events start at 3:30 with the long jump, followed by the 110m hurdles at 4:00 p.m. Sunday gets going at 1:15 p.m. with the discus. The full meet schedule can be viewed here.

ASU enters the meet ranked 26th nationally on the men's side and 28th on the women's. Top-25 performers include:

  • Turner Washington: 1st in both shot and discus
  • Carlan Naisant, 16th/javelin
  • Kentre Patterson, 21st/110H
  • Jamar Marshall Jr.: 20th/110H, 22nd/400H
  • 4x1 squad of Kratz, Mitchell, Drayden and Marshall Jr. (23rd)
  • Jorinde van Klinken: 5th/discus, 10th/shot
  • Beatrice Llano, 7th/hammer
  • Alizee Minard, 14th/javelin

  • Hayley Rayburn, 22nd/pole vault
  • Shelby Moran, 25th/hammer
  • 4x1 squad of Anokye, Hobson, Christie-Galloway, Williams (25th)

ASU boasts the best marks in the conference in six events heading into the championships. Naisant leads the men's javelin, while Minard has the top spot in the women's event. Three-time USTFCCCA National Male Athlete of the Week Turner Washington has a six-meter lead in the discus and one-meter lead in the shot. Cole Riddle, who ranks 26th nationally, has the best men's pole vault mark, while ASU goes 1-2-3 on the women's side with Hanson, Rayburn and Tommi Hintnaus. Jorinde van Klinken rounds out the group leaders with her almost four-meter lead in the women's discus.

ASU has multiple athletes close to hitting an IAAF Olympic standard in their respective events. Washington is the lone Sun Devil to surpass a mark (shot and discus), but Jamar Marshall Jr. (13.67) and Kentre Patterson (13.69) are both within reach of the USATF qualifying mark (13.48). Marshall's 400H time (50.88) is also right there next to USATF's standard (49.50). Dubem Nwachukwu (46.39) is also close in the 400m (45.20).

Jorinde van Klinken (17.76m) of the Netherlands is two and a half feet away from the IAAF standard in the women's shot (18.50), and Josephine Anokye of Ghana is right on the cusp of hitting a trio of IAAF standards in the 100m (11.15), 200m (22.80), and 400m (51.35). Her times are 110m/11.40, 200m/23.00, and 400m/53.39.
