8 Sun Devils Going for Gold in Eugene

TEMPE - The season comes down to this.
 
Eight Sun Devils will go for gold Wednesday-Saturday in Eugene, Oregon at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Oregon at Hayward Field. Throws U is sending USTFCCCA West  Region Field Athletes of the Year Jorinde van Klinken and Turner Washington, Pac-12 javelin champions Carlan Naisant and Alizee Minard, Ian Schulz, Shelby Moran and Beatrice Llano. Pac-12 110H champion Jamar Marshall Jr. will represent ASU on the track.
 
Competition for the Sun Devils kicks off Wednesday at 6:02 p.m. with Marshall Jr. in the 110H, followed by Naisant at 6:15 in the javelin and Washington at 7:10 in the shot put. The entirety of the championships will be broadcast live via ESPN networks.

  • This is her first semester as a Sun Devil (academic grad student, athletic junior)
  • Earned USTFCCCA West Region Male Field Athlete of the Year honors
  • Leads the NCAA in the discus, ranks 12th in the shot
  • Leads the world in the discus (70.22m/230-4) – this is also a new Dutch national record.
  • 70.22m mark is the new program record, and her 18.06m/59-3 PR is fifth all-time at ASU.
  • Won every discus competition she's competed in this season (seven), has won three shot put competitions.

Turner Washington - shot, disc – Will go to USATF Trials the week after nationals to start qualifying for a spot on Team USA in discus and shot put events.

  • Holds the program record in the outdoor discus (66.26m/217-4)
    • Broke the program discus record three times this season.
  • Second all-time at ASU in the shot (21.07m/69-1.5)
  • Leads the NCAA in both the shot and discus
  • Earned USTFCCCA National Male Athlete of the Week honors on March 23, April 20, and May 4 before earning USTFCCCA West Region Male Field Athlete of the Year honors
  • Didn't compete at Pac-12 Championships due to injury.

Jamar Marshall - 11H, 4x1 – He is .01 second off from hitting the USATF standard for trials

  • One of the fastest 110m hurdlers in the country and he's only a freshman.
  • Won ASU it's first Pac-12 110H title since 1987
  • Ran the 110H in an illegally wind-aided 13.39 (2.8) at the NCAA West Prelims May 2021. His 13.66 from that meet's finals earned him 10th and punched his ticket to the national meet.
  • Broke ASU's 34-year old 110H record when he ran 13.49 at the Pac-12 Championships prelims. Matched that time in the finals.  Ran the 400H in 50.09 to earn a sixth-place spot on the ASU all-time list.

Alizee Minard – javelin

  • First semester as a Sun Devil
  • Earned the first women's javelin conference title in ASU history this year. Her 53.31m/181-5 PR ranks second all-time at ASU.
  • She has the eighth-best mark in the NCAA and enters the national meet with the sixth-best mark out of prelims.

 
Carlan Naisant – javelin

  • Won ASU it's first Pac-12 men's javelin title ever this year.
  • Sits fifth all-time at ASU for the javelin (71.54m/234-8)
  • Won his first six javelin contests this season before taking seventh at the NCAA West Prelims.
  • Thew the 19th-furthest mark heading into the national meet

 
 
Beatrice Llano – hammer

  • Has finished top three in the four events she's competed in this season, with two of those being victories.
  • Ranks eighth in the NCAA and enters the championships with the fourth-best mark from prelims.
  • Sits second all-time at ASU in the hammer (71.43m/234-4 from 2019) but hasn't gotten past 68m this year.
