How the Devils Fared at the Cal Invitational

Sep 26, 2021

BERKELEY, Calif. -- In the first tuneup of an action-packed fall season, six Sun Devils spent the weekend competing at the Cal Invitational, a 14-team tournament hosted by the Cal Golden Bears at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

The doubles tandem of Cali Jankowski and Domenika Turkovic advanced as far as the Blue bracket semifinals before falling to eventual champion, Cal's Haley Giavara and Valentina Ivanov, 8-3.

The pairs of Sedona Gallagher and Marianna Argyrokastriti and Amber Lee and Natasha Hill were both eliminated in the quarterfinals round, though they each won their first doubles match of the weekend.

The Sun Devils were a perfect 3-0 in doubles play after day one, a solid sign of what this group is capable of, given it was the first time Lee, Hill and Argyrokastriti had participated in a fall tournament.

Four Sun Devils, Gallagher, Agyrokastriti, Hill and Lee, each won their first singles match to make the Top 16 round.

Jankowski, though falling in her first singles match, rebounded nicely and won two backdraw matches to reach the semis of the Blue Singles Consolation bracket.

Up next on the Sun Devils' fall slate is the Michigan Invitational, hosted by the Wolverines in Ann Arbor from October 1-3. It'll serve as yet another good step for a program looking to get back into game speed for the first time in four months.
