Women's Soccer Welcomes Washington State and Washington to Ute Field

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women's soccer team returns to Ute Field for two Pac-12 matchups this week. Utah will host Washington State at 7 p.m. MT on Thursday and conclude the week by hosting Washington on Sunday at 12 p.m. MT.

Last Time Out
The last time the Utes took to the pitch was on Friday, September 24, when they traveled to Stanford University to open Pac-12 play. The Utes were defeated, 3-0, by the No. 10 team in the country. In the match, Chelsea Peterson tallied a single-game career-high with 12 saves. Courtney Talbot led the team with three shots in the contest. 
 
Scouting Washington State
Washington State enters the weekend matchup with the Utes with a record of 7-1-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in Pac-12 play. The Cougars are currently on a four-match winning streak that was started with a 3-0 win over Kansas. During the winning streak, Washington State has outscored its opponents, 10-0. Only two teams have scored on Washington State this season, Arkansas State and Seattle. Washington State is allowing .325 goals per game, the eighth-best mark in the nation. Elyse Bennett leads the team with six goals, and Grayson Lynch follows with five goals. Bennett and Lynch are two of ten Cougars who have scored this season. Marissa Zucchetto leads the team in the net as she has appeared in seven games, making six starts. She has eight saves on the season and has four wins. 
 
Scouting Washington
Washington comes into the weekend matchup with a record of 2-4-2 on the season and 0-0-1 in conference play. The Huskies are coming off a 2-2 draw with Arizona State last Friday in the Pac-12 opener. Washington will play at Colorado on Thursday before traveling to Ute Field. Washington has scored eight goals this season and is averaging one goal per game. They are outshooting opponents 13.5 to 9.6 per game. Jessika Cowart and Summer Yates lead the team with two goals each. Olivia Sekany has appeared in each game between the pipes for the Huskies. She has tallied 24 saves and has a goals-against-average of 1.39. Utah is 7-7-0 all-time against Washington.
 
Last Time Against Washington State
The Utes and Cougars played twice during the 2020-21 spring season, both coming in Pullman. The Utes and Cougars matched up on Friday, February 26, 2021, and then again on Sunday, February 28, 2021. Washington State entered the weekend ranked No. 15 in the nation. The weekend started with a 0-0 double-overtime draw, followed by Washington State winning 2-0 on Sunday. Utah is 8-8-2 in program history against Washington State.
 
Last Time Against Washington
On March 26, the Huskies of Washington came to Salt Lake City as the No. 18 ranked team in the nation. Utah was defeated by Washington, 1-0. The Utes had four shots, all on goal, in the contest. Courtney Talbot led the team with two shots on goal in the match. Utah's defense limited the Huskies to only three shots on goal in the game. 
 
Peterson's Career-Day
In the Pac-12 opener against No. 10 Stanford, Chelsea Peterson tallied a career-high 12 saves. Her previous high was seven against No. 3 UCLA on March 14, 2021. Peterson was the first Ute to record ten or more saves in a match since Carly Nelson accomplished the feat against No. 21 Colorado during the 2019 season. 
 
Team Academic Award
On September 23, the Utah women's soccer team continued its off-field academic success. They earned the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for the 12th-consecutive season and the 20th overall award since the award began in 1996. Utah was one of eight schools in the Pac-12 to receive this honor, and the Utes GPA of 3.70 was the highest of Pac-12 schools on the list. 
 
Utes at Home
Utah has played five home games this season, and they hold a record of 3-1-1 at home. The Utes are 2-0-1 over their past three matches and over that span, Utah has outscored its opponents, 6-0. During this span, the Utes tied No. 22 Brigham Young. 
 
Next Up
Following the two-game homestand, Utah hits the road for two games in Los Angeles when they travel to UCLA and USC for Pac-12 play. Utah takes on UCLA on Thursday, October 7, and concludes the road trip at USC on Sunday, October 10.
