Practice Report: USC Football Feels 'Sense Of Urgency' With Spring Camp Coming To A Close

Apr 14, 2022

USC's 2022 spring camp is heading into its final lap. The Trojans returned to Howard Jones Field Thursday (April 14) for their 11th practice with just four more remaining.

"It's exciting every day," outside linebackers coach Roy Manning said following practice. "These guys continue to grow, continue to give great effort and become what we want them to become."

While USC doesn't have the pressure of wins and losses at the moment, Manning stressed that the team needs to use this time wisely.

"We treat it like there is a game, as far as our sense of urgency out here," Manning said. "Because we want to come out of spring ball feeling like we really got something accomplished."

Things to note from USC's eleventh practice of spring:

  • Defensive line coach Shaun Nua praised redshirt senior Solomon Tuliaupupu, who has moved to the rush end position this offseason.
    • "I don't think there's anyone that has true USC blood more than Solomon," Nua said. "He loves this place ... He's exactly where he belongs now, and he's showing some very, very good stuff."

  • Inside linebacker Ralen Goforth shared that he gained ten pounds over the offseason and credited USC's strength staff for the change.
    • "This is the first camp where I haven't really dipped in weight," Goforth explained. "I actually grew in weight. I'm very happy."

  • Goforth also explained how he's pushed himself to take on more of a leadership role this offseason as one of the more experienced linebackers in the room.
    • "Just holding myself to a higher standard. I try to push myself everyday," Goforth said. "Coach preaches taking yourself to the edge. So that's where I try to take myself too."

  • Rush end Korey Foreman is just getting into the heart of his spring camp experience due to a "minor dislocation" of his knee that he suffered during a player-run practice this offseason.
    • "I'm a lot better now," Foreman said. "[I] just keep working and [I'm] in the rehab room like five times a day … It's all about the extra hours you put in."

  • Foreman's position coach, Roy Manning, shared that he has had to adjust his coaching style for the sophomore given that he's essentially on his fifth practice while the rest of the team finished its 11th.
    • "The biggest thing I see out of him: he plays football the right way," Manning said of Foreman. "He plays with this urgency and recklessness … It's exciting to see him move around and fly around. He made some big-time plays even today."

  • Inside linebacker Shane Lee gave more insight into how he's trying to be a part of the culture change in USC's football program.
    • "I think the biggest thing is just the work," Lee said. "No matter how you feel, you've got to be able to come in and do whatever it takes to get better."
