NCAA Prelim Fields Include 34 Huskies

May 19, 2022

SEATTLE – Coming off a great Pac-12 Championships showing, the Husky track and field squad now turns its focus to the second phase of the postseason, the NCAA West Preliminary Championships. Fields were announced today, and the Huskies will be sending thirty-four athletes to the meet that runs from May 25-28, hosted by Arkansas in Fayetteville. The West Prelims are the path through which athletes reach the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June.

Thirty-four Husky athletes will make up the thirty-seven entries, as three Huskies will compete in multiple events. Several more Huskies could have declared and competed in more than one event, but had to choose the best path to potential NCAA success.

In addition to the West Prelim qualifiers, the NCAA Championship multi-event qualifiers were announced, as the top-24 nationally go straight through to Eugene. Ida Eikeng, the school record-holder and fourth-ranked heptathlete in the NCAA this season, will make her second appearance. Ollie Thorner will advance and compete in his first decathlon championships, becoming the first Husky decathlete at nationals since Jeremy Taiwo in 2013. Both Eikeng and Thorner scored their qualifying marks at the Mt. SAC Relays earlier this season. Thorner is seeded 21st overall in the field.

The top-48 athletes from the western half of the country, in every individual event will compete over one or two rounds in Fayetteville to try and finish in the top-12. Those that place in the top-12 continue on to the NCAA Outdoor final site in Eugene, Ore. from June 8-11.
