Thorbjornsen Wraps Play At NCAAs
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Stanford sophomore Michael Thorbjornsen conlcuded play at the NCAA Championships on Monday at Grayhawk Golf Club, firing a 1-over 71 to tie for 32nd. The Cardinal finished 18th at the championship but failed to make the cut on Sunday, but Thorbjornsen was one of the top nine individuals not on an advancing team to play the fourth and final round of stroke play on Monday.
For the week, Thorbjornsen finished with a 9-over 289, with his Monday 71 matching Friday's 71 for Stanford's best round of the tournament. Thorbjornsen teed off just after noon local time and birdied his first hole of the day, No. 10, before a bogey at 11 to fall back to even par. After four straight pars, Thorbjornsen bogeys No. 16 but birdied No. 17 and made the turn at even par. The sophomore began the day tied for 44th, moving up 12 spots on Monday. He began his back nine with three straight pars before a birdie at No. 4, but he'd finish with bogeys and No. 5 and No. 7 and three pars to close his round at 1-over.
Thorbjornsen was named Ping All-Region on Sunday. He played 38 rounds this season and had a scoring average of 70.66, the 10th-best in program history for a single season.
