Preston Summerhays continues to lead the No. 2/2 Arizona State Men's Golf, shooting a 67 in the first of two rounds in the first day of play at the Valspar Invitational. The Sun Devils sit in fourth while Summerhays finds himself tied for tenth on the individual leaderboard.

Arizona State currently sits at fourth overall in the 16-team field with a day to play after shooting two rounds (278-281=559/-9) in day one of action in the sunshine state.

Summerhays (67-71+131/-4) shot an impressive 4-under 67 in the first round with six birdies. Luke Potter (68-75+143/+1) holed out on the par-4, 300-yard sixth hole for eagle and added three more birdies in his first round, shooting a 2-under 68. Michael Mjaaseth (71-69=140/-2) finished with an even 71, finding the cup a stroke early on five holes for five birdies.

"This has been a tough tournament for us to play awesome every year," Arizona State Head Coach Matt Thurmond said. "I thought we did a good job overall today. Once again we are in the final group of a great field with a chance to win. We'll need to play a bit better for sure, but we have better in us."

Mjaaseth made seven birdies in his second round of the day, posting a 2-under 69. His 12 birdies on the day were tied for third in the field. Josele Ballester (73-69=142/E) nailed four birdies to shoot a 2-under 69 in his second round of play. Summerhays shot even in his second round.

The Sun Devils are a shot out of third and five shots out of second with a day to play. All five Sun Devils sit in the top 40 after two rounds. Ryggs Johnston (72-72=144/+2) shot two rounds of 1-over 72 to sit at T40.

The Sun Devils will look to build upon day one with strong showings in the final round Tuesday. Pairings and tee times for Tuesday will be announced late Monday night. Live stats will be provided on Golfstat.com
