Pac-12 Women's Lacrosse Weekly Rundown - February 14, 2024

USC moved up to No. 15 in the latest IWLCA Top-25 Poll, and Stanford is the top team receiving votes. The Trojans are one of four teams in the top 25 with a 2-0 record.

The Pac-12 went a combined 9-3 the opening weekend, and five teams currently boast an undefeated record. 

Around the League

  • USC (2-0) defeated No. 15 Army to kick off the 2024 campaign. Ella Heaney scored six goals to pace the Trojans and reach 100 in her career, becoming the eighth Trojan to reach the milestone. 
    • The USC defense held Army scoreless in the opening frame and to just two goals in the fourth. The Trojans outscored the hosts 7-2 in those two quarters. 
    • USC was one of two teams nationally (Johns Hopkins vs. UAlbany) to win a top-25 game on the road last weekend. It was USC’s first top-25 road win since April 3, 2022 when they beat then-No. 13 Michigan, 14-10.
  • Arizona State (2-0) outscored its opponents 38-20 in its two games this past weekend.
    • The team’s 21 goals against Xavier were the most by the Sun Devils since March 20, 2022. Shannon Urey scored five times in her Arizona State debut, and followed up with three more in the 17-0 win over Niagara. Her eight goals are the second-most in the Pac-12.
  • California (1-0) erupted for 19 goals in its season-opening win over Akron. The 19 goals were its most since they scored 20 on April 7, 2017.
    • 10 Golden Bears recorded points, and Mya Wang led all scorers with six goals and seven points.
  • Oregon (1-0) defeated Youngstown State, 19-8 to give Jessica Drummond her first win as head coach.
    • It was the most goals scored by the Ducks since March 8, 2020 when they posted 20 against Fresno State.
  • Eve Hritzuk made the most of her Colorado (1-0) debut on Sunday, scoring six goals including the game-winner with just under two minutes left to lead the Buffaloes past Louisville, 16-15.
    • Madeline Pisani recorded a hat trick in the first five minutes of action, and went on to tally a career-high five goals in the victory.
  • San Diego State (1-1) split its opening weekend, defeating Xavier, 16-6 on Sunday.
    • Eight different Aztecs scored, and Caitlin Boughton made 11 saves in her first career start. She currently leads the Pac-12 with 18 saves.
  • UC Davis (1-1) also split its first two games of 2024.
    • The Aggies defeated Akron, 20-7 behind Ella Brislin’s five goals and Grace Gebhardt’s four assists.
  • Stanford (0-1) fell on the road to No. 16 Virginia, 10-9.
    • Jordyn Case and Aliya Poliski netted three goals apiece and the Cardinal held the Cavaliers to just 18 shots on the day.

This Week 

  • California embarks on its first road trip of the season against Le Moyne on Thursday and Cornell on Saturday.
    • A win over Le Moyne would give the Golden Bears their best start to the season since 2007 (started 3-0 that year).
  • Arizona State hosts Pittsburgh on Thursday.
    • The Sun Devils are 2-0 to start the season for the first time since 2021, and are facing the Panthers for the first time ever.
  • Colorado heads east to face No. 17 Penn State on Friday and Saint Joseph’s on Sunday.
    • The Buffaloes defeated the Nittany Lions the last and only time these two teams faced off back in 2017, and a win would be Colorado’s first top-25 non-conference road win since April 27, 2022 when they defeated then-No. 10 Denver.
  • Oregon’s homestand continues Friday against St. Francis (PA).
    • The Ducks have won four of their last five non-conference home games.
  • No. 15 USC hosts Hofstra in its first home game of 2024.
    • The Trojans have won their last five non-conference home openers. 
  • RV Stanford returns to the East Coast to take on RV Yale on Saturday before visiting Holy Cross on Monday.
    • The Cardinal last faced Yale in 2017 and are 1-1 all-time against the Bulldogs.
  • San Diego State welcomes UC Davis to the Aztec Lacrosse Field in a non-conference bout. 
    • The Aggies hold a 9-6 all-time advantage over San Diego State, however the Aztecs have won two of the last three at home against UC Davis. 

Preseason Coaches Poll

  • USC was selected first in the 2024 Pac-12 Women’s Lacrosse preseason coaches poll. The defending regular season and tournament champion garnered 48 total points and six first-place votes, while Stanford was picked to finish second with 44 points and two first-place selections. 

Returners & Additions

  • The Pac-12 returns 13 postseason All-Conference honorees from a season ago, including reigning Pac-12 Midfielder of the Year Claudia Shevitz, the 2023 Pac-12 Co-Goalkeeper of the Year Kait Devir, and Reigning Freshman of the Year Teagan NG.
  • The Conference welcomes seven standouts featured on ILWomen’s Class of 2023 Power 100 Incoming Freshmen Rankings: Stanford Aliya Polisky - No. 14, A, Stanford; Lindsey Devir - No. 16, M, Stanford; Ava Arceri - No. 24, M, Stanford; Shae Lembo - No. 32, G, Stanford; Anna Colpack - No. 54, M, Stanford; Ellie Johnson - No. 71, D, Stanford; Anna Regan - No. 86, M, USC.

2024 Pac-12 Tournament   

  • The 2024 Pac-12 Tournament is set for May 1-4 at the LA Memorial Coliseum. The event will consist of a six team, single-elimination tournament format, and the tournament field will be based on regular-season conference record. All five contests are slated to broadcast on Pac-12 Network and the Pac-12 Now app. .
