Pac-12 Women's Lacrosse Weekly Rundown - February 29, 2024

Once again the Pac-12 has two teams ranked in the latest IWLCA Top-25: No. 16 USC and No. 19 Colorado. Colorado moved up one spot from last week and is at its highest ranking since 2020 when it was ranked No. 18 during week one. USC has been ranked in the top 25 every poll this season.

Oregon sits atop the Pac-12 standings with a 3-0 record. The Ducks are off to their best start since 2018 in which they were also 3-0.

Around the League

  • The Ducks topped Marist, 16-9 to cap off a perfect 3-0 homestand. Oregon has scored 16 or more goals in all three games this season, and has the ninth-best scoring offense nationally at 17.33 GPG.
    • Oregon’s 9.33 scoring margin leads the Pac-12 and ranks them fifth nationally. 
  • UC Davis (4-1) is on a four-game winning streak after topping St. Bonaventure, 13-9.
    • The Aggies are 3-0 at home this season.
  • Colorado (3-1) was handed its first loss of the season to then-No. 4 Northwestern this past weekend. 
    • Eve Hritzuk, Madeline Pisani, Maddie Shoup each recorded hat tricks. 
  • USC (3-1) fell to No. 6 Michigan for its first setback of 2024.
    • Shelby Tilton scored all three goals for the Trojans.
  • Stanford (2-2) won its home opener, 18-5 over Vanderbilt.
    • The Cardinal outshot the Commodores 38-17, and have outshot every opponent so far this season. Stanford has also posted more draw controls than its opposition in every game.
  • Arizona State (3-2) fell to then-No. 11 Stony Brook and No. 6 Michigan this past week for its first losses of the season.
    • The Sun Devils narrowly lost to the sixth-ranked Wolverines, 10-9, and are the first team to score more than four goals against them this season.
  • San Diego State’s (1-3) Jenna McDermott is fourth nationally in shot percentage at a 76.9 clip. McDermott has 10 goals on 13 shots this season.
  • Stanford’s Annabel Frist’s 10.00 draw controls per game is the second-best in NCAA DI, and Oregon’s Rachel Pallo’s 9.33 is the fifth best.
  • The Ducks are averaging a NCAA-best 20.00 draw controls per game, and their 69.0 draw control percentage is second best nationally. 
  • Colorado’s Madeline Pisani leads the league in goals (16) and shots (29).

This Week 

  • No. 19 Colorado hits the road again for Central Michigan (Thursday) and No. 6 Michigan on Saturday.
    • The Buffs are facing Central Michigan for the first time, and have split the six-game series with Michigan.
  • California (1-3) meets St. Bonaventure for the first time ever on Thursday, which continues a five-game homestand for the Golden Bears. Cal then faces Army on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. PT draw.
    • Kennedy Mason currently paces the team with 10 points (seven goals, three assists), having scored in all four contests this year. 
  • No. 16 USC has a three-game road trip on deck in Towson (Friday),  No. 15 Johns Hopkins (Sunday) and VCU (Tuesday).
    • The Trojans are 2-0 on the road so far this season, and Sunday’s matchup against No. 15 Johns Hopkins will be their second ranked matchup of 2024.
  • San Diego State wraps up its road stint against Campbell (Friday) and High Point (Sunday).
    • Goalie Caitlin Boughton leads the league with a 55.8 save percentage, and has 29 saves on the year.
  • Oregon embarks on its first road trip of the season to visit Rider on Friday and No. 22 Rutgers on Sunday.
    • Anna Simmons is second in the league with 14 goals this season, and has recorded a hat trick or better in all three games so far. Simmons is fourth nationally with 4.67 GPG.
  • Arizona State has its third consecutive game against a ranked opponent this Sunday when it faces No. 11 Florida.
    • Head coach Taryn VanThof was an assistant coach at Florida for six years.
  • The Aggies are back in action on Sunday to wrap up their homestand against Davidson.
    • A win on Sunday would mark UC Davis’ best start to a season since 2014 when it went 5-1.
  • Stanford hosts Davidson on Tuesday, March 5 looking for its third-straight win. 
    • The Cardinal is 4-0 all-time against Davidson.

Preseason Coaches Poll

  • USC was selected first in the 2024 Pac-12 Women’s Lacrosse preseason coaches poll. The defending regular season and tournament champion garnered 48 total points and six first-place votes, while Stanford was picked to finish second with 44 points and two first-place selections. 

Returners & Additions

  • The Pac-12 returns 13 postseason All-Conference honorees from a season ago, including reigning Pac-12 Midfielder of the Year Claudia Shevitz, the 2023 Pac-12 Co-Goalkeeper of the Year Kait Devir, and Reigning Freshman of the Year Teagan NG.
  • The Conference welcomes seven standouts featured on ILWomen’s Class of 2023 Power 100 Incoming Freshmen Rankings: Stanford Aliya Polisky - No. 14, A, Stanford; Lindsey Devir - No. 16, M, Stanford; Ava Arceri - No. 24, M, Stanford; Shae Lembo - No. 32, G, Stanford; Anna Colpack - No. 54, M, Stanford; Ellie Johnson - No. 71, D, Stanford; Anna Regan - No. 86, M, USC.

2024 Pac-12 Tournament   

  • The 2024 Pac-12 Tournament is set for May 1-4 at the LA Memorial Coliseum. The event will consist of a six team, single-elimination tournament format, and the tournament field will be based on regular-season conference record. All five contests are slated to broadcast on Pac-12 Network and the Pac-12 Now app. .
