Stanford and USC climb into the top-3 after day two of Pac-12 Championships

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Day two of the 2024 Pac-12 Women’s Swimming and Men’s & Women’s Diving Championships started with some history being made as Emilia Nilsson Garip earned the Utes their first ever Pac-12 Championship Diving title after winning the women's 1-meter.

Arizona State, Stanford and USC all picked up wins in the women's swimming portion of the evening. For the second year in a row, ASU's Lindsay Looney earned the first win of the individual events. 

The Stanford women went 5-for-5 in podium finishes on the evening and are 6-for-7 in the Championships.

The strong performances on day two by the Trojan and Cardinal women catapulted them atop the leaderboard, where they sit in second and third, respectively, behind first-place California.

Cardinal men's diver Jack Ryan capped off the evening with a sweep of the springboard competitions. 

CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES: 

Women’s 1-Meter:

  • UTAH freshman Emilia Nilsson Garip opened the Women’s Diving competition with a bang, bringing home the Utes' first Pac-12 Diving title. 
  • With 321.65 points, the newcomer earned the second-highest score of her career and a first Pac-12 Championship for the Utes in any of the diving events. 
  • With her seventh Pac-12 Championship podium finish, USC’s Nike Agubiade took second place with a score of 310.70. The graduate student topped her 2023 Championships score. 
  • STANFORD’s Lauren Burch took home her first Pac-12 podium finish with a personal-best 301.45 on the 1-Meter after not scoring higher than fifth in the Championship event during her career.

500 Free:

  • In back-to-back fashion, ARIZONA STATE’s Lindsay Looney took the 500 Freestyle title for the second year in a row, swimming the fastest time in the Conference this season. 
  • Swimming a 4:35.05, good for fourth-fastest in the nation this season, Looney and the Sun Devils have captured three of the last four 500 Free titles and five in program history. 
  • Swimming the sixth-fastest time in the country, Stanford’s Aurora Roghair took a close second, finishing in 4:36.32 to top her season-best. 
  • Rounding out the podium was Cal’s Mia Motekaitis who swam a top-8 time in Golden Bears’ history, finishing with 4:37.77 on the clock. 

200 IM:

  • In her first Pac-12 Championship final, Stanford freshman Caroline Bricker swam a 1:53.31 NCAA A Standard in the 200 IM to earn her first career Pac-12 Championship title. 
  • The newcomer swam the eighth-fastest time in the country, blazing past her personal best (1:55.48) and landing as fifth in Cardinal history. After setting the 4A record just one year ago in high school, the first-year swimmer has shaved five seconds off the record.
  • Finishing just milliseconds behind Bricker was defending Pac-12 Champion Leah Polonsky who swam a 1:53.58, which was two seconds faster than her season best and bumped her up three spots (6) in the Golden Bear record book.
  • Sophomore Sun Devil Ieva Maluka earned her second podium finish of the Championship after swimming her way to third (1:54.43) and her first individual podium finish. 

50 Free:

  • Trojan senior Anicka Delgado is back on top of the podium in the 50 Free after taking home first in 2022. Delgado is just one of two Trojans to have won the event and the only one to win it twice. 
  • The 2021 Olympian swam a 21.95 to bring first place home, topping her second-place SCY record in USC history by .03 seconds (21.97).
  • Stephanie Akakabota of Cal earned her second podium finish of the Championship with a time of 22.02 to set a new personal record and take second. 
  • Stanford’s Amy Tang closed out the individual wins for the Cardinal,’ swimming a 22.15 to earn her first individual Pac-12 Championship podium finish. 

Men’s 3-Meter:

  • Stanford's Jack Ryan reclaimed the Men’s 3 Meter title after scoring a 474.05, the highest score in the country this season and his personal Pac-12 Championship record.
  • Ryan has now swept the springboard competitions after taking home first in the 1 Meter competition on day one of the Championships.
  • Utah Ute Elias Petersen snagged his second-consecutive third-place finish in the 3 Meter with a final score of 416.20.
  • Wrapping up the men’s springboard competition was now four-time Pac-12 podium finisher Laurent Gosselin-Paradis scoring a 393 to take home third.

200 Free Relay: 

  • In a sea of seniors, Minna Abraham anchored her way to the Trojans' first 200 Free Relay win in program history.
  • Seniors Anicka DelgadoCaroline FamousKaitlyn Dobler and newcomer Minna Abraham swam a 1:27.10 to take home the relay team’s first gold of the Championship.
  • For the first time since 2021, Cal's Eloise RileyStephanie AkakabotaMckenna Stone and Isabelle Stadden secured a runner-up finish in the 200 Free Relay. The quad swam a season-best 1:27.75 to get the silver.
  • Swimming a 1:28.05, Stanford’s Gigi JohnsonAmy TangAnna Shaw and Kayla Wilson capped off day two of the competition with a third-place finish.
