BOULDER, Colo. - California track & field kicked off the Pac-12 Championships at Colorado's Potts Field on Friday, with a total of 18 Golden Bears going toe-to-toe with the conference's best across the first half of the decathlon and heptathlon as well as seven individual events.

Sophomore Jason Plumb was Cal's standout finisher of the day, posting a mark of 7.64m (25-0.75) to clinch third place in the men's long jump – the program's first Pac-12 podium finisher in the event since Walt Jones IV in 2015. Senior Mason Mangum also scored with a sixth-place leap of 7.58m (24-10.5). Over on the track, freshman Justin Pretre was the first Bear to qualify for a Sunday final, earning the fifth auto-Q in his heat by .04 seconds at 3:48.86.

Decathletes Seth Johnson and Luke Buddie, who each scored over 7000 points earlier this season at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, currently sit in fourth and fifth place, respectively, after the first day of competition. Johnson posted top-three finishes in the 100m (11.02), the high jump (1.94m/6-4.25) and the 400m (49.59), as well as personal records in the 400m and the shot put (12.33m/40-5.5) Buddie posted a third-place result of his own in the long jump, in which he improved his PR by nine inches to 6.99m (22-11.25).

On the women's side, senior Kay Racine (seventh place, 58.91m/193-3) and junior Destiny Okoh (eighth place, 58.41m/191-7) each scored for the Bears in the women's hammer, while freshman Adrianna Coleman finished just outside of the top eight at 58.21m (190-11) but reached the final. Junior Aysha Shaheed posted a qualifying result on the track, moving on to Sunday's 200m final with a time of 23.55 in the preliminary.
