#BackThePac: Four Pac-12 Men's Basketball teams advance to 2021 NCAA Sweet 16

Mar 22, 2021

SAN FRANCISCO - The Pac-12 equaled its league record with four men's basketball programs advancing to the Sweet 16 of the 2021 NCAA Tournament on Monday. No. 6 seed USC, No. 7 seed OREGON, No. 11 seed UCLA and No. 12 seed OREGON STATE all advanced from the Second Round with double-digit victories.

While OREGON reached the Sweet 16 for the fourth time in as many appearances (2016, 2017, 2019, 2021) and UCLA advanced for the fourth time in the past seven tournaments (2014, 2015, 2017), it marks the triumphant returns for OREGON STATE (first Sweet 16 since 1982) and USC (first since 2007).

It marks the fourth time in Conference history that four member programs reached the Regionals of the NCAA Tournament along with 1997, 1998 and 2001.

The Pac-12's nine total wins so far in the 2021 NCAA Tournament are tied for the sixth-most in the Conference's history:

  • 13 - 2001, 1997
  • 11 - 1998
  • 10 - 2017, 2007
  • 9 - 2021, 2002, 1995

With five teams combining to go 9-1 through the first two rounds of the 2021 NCAA Tournament, the Pac-12 equaled the third-best record for any league with five-or-more teams in the field since the tourney’s expansion in 1985:

  • 2016 ACC - 12-1
  • 2015 ACC - 11-1
  • 2021 Pac-12 - 9-1
  • 1990 ACC - 9-1
  • 1989 Big Ten - 9-1
  • 1985 ACC - 9-1

Pac-12 teams were dominant in going 9-1 through the first two rounds with eight wins by double figures and an average margin of +13.1 points, which is the fifth-largest of any league with five-or-more teams in the field since the tourney’s expansion in 1985:

  • 1993 ACC - +16.3 (9-2 record)
  • 1996 Big East - +14.4 (8-2)
  • 2001 Pac-12 - +14.0 (8-1)
  • 2009 Big East - +13.5 (11-2)
  • 2021 Pac-12 - +13.1 (9-1)

Six of the Pac-12's nine Tournament wins so far have come against power conference opponents, which is tied for the second-most in any single tournament for the Conference (8 - 1997, 6 - 2021, 2001).

  • No. 11 UCLA 86, No. 11 Michigan State 80 (OT)
  • No. 12 Oregon State 70, No. 5 Tennessee 56
  • No. 5 Colorado 96, No. 12 Georgetown 73
  • No. 12 Oregon State 80, No. 4 Oklahoma State 70
  • No. 7 Oregon 95, No. 2 Iowa 80
  • No. 6 USC 85, No. 3 Kansas 51

With Oregon State and UCLA advancing, the Pac-12 joins the Southeastern Conference in 1985 (No. 11 Auburn, No. 12 Kentucky) as the only leagues to have two double-digit seeds reach the Sweet 16. The Bruins are the fifth-ever team to emerge from the First Four to advance to the Sweet 16 (VCU 2011, La Salle 2013, Tennessee 2014, Syracuse 2018).

There were 12 total upsets (team seeded five spots lower than opponent) through the first two rounds of the 2021 NCAA Tournament, with the Pac-12 accounting for four of them - all four coming by double digits:

  • No. 12 Oregon State 70, No. 5 Tennessee 56
  • No. 11 UCLA 73, No. 6 BYU 62
  • No. 12 Oregon State 80, No. 4 Oklahoma State 70
