Huskies Hit Berkeley for Sunday Matchup with Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – Washington women's soccer wraps up its Bay Area road trip on Sunday, taking on the Cal Bears at 1 p.m. PT at Edwards Stadium.

SCOUTING CAL
Neil McGuire is in his 16th season as the head coach at Cal, sitting as the program's all-time wins leader with 175 victories during his time in Berkeley. In McGuire's 15 previous seasons, the Bears have earned an NCAA Tournament bid 12 times.
 
The Bears enter Sunday's matchup with a 7-3-3 record, tied with the Huskies for fifth in the Pac-12 table with a 2-2-0 league record. Cal is undefeated at Edwards Stadium this season, boasting a 3-0-1 record. The Bears have one their last two league games, topping Arizona and Washington State.
 
Senior Roy Keely paces the Bears with seven goals this season, scoring both of Cal's goals in the 2-1 victory over Washington State on Thursday. Sophomore defender Ayo Oke leads the team with five assists.

Senior Angelina Anderson has started all 13 games between the posts, registering a 0.91 goals against average with a .718 save percentage on 28 stops.

SERIES HISTORY
Washington owns a slight lead in the all-time series with Cal at 17-13-1. The Huskies have won each of the last four matchups with the Bears to garner that advantage. The Dawgs have won two of the last three meetings at Edwards Stadium, holding a 5-9-0 record all-time in Berkeley.
 
LAST MEETING (10/7/21)
SEATTLE - The Washington women's soccer team defeated California 1-0 on Thursday night at Husky Soccer Stadium. Summer Yates scored early in the 6th minute to give UW the lead and the Dawgs never looked back, earning their first Pac-12 win of the season.
 
Helena Reischling played a deep ball in the box that Yates was able to get her head on and placed it wonderfully into the left corner of the net. Yates' goal was her third of the season and the 18th of her Husky career. Jessika Cowart earned the second assist on the play.
 
Olivia Sekany was solid as ever in goal, with three saves on the night. She also earned the shutout, her third of the season.
 
Sekany was rarely challenged in a significant way, thanks to the Husky defensive effort that didn't allow the Golden Bears many quality opportunities. The back line of Tasia Kravitz, Cowart, Peyton McGee and Reischling were excellent all night, thwarting any attack Cal might have had.
 
Yates was the shot leader on the night for UW with three and Kala McDaniel who earned a start, also had two shots. McDaniel nearly had the second goal for Washington as her shot later in the first half rattled off the top of the crossbar on a shot from distance.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING
On Sunday, Summer Yates will become Washington's all-time record holder in games played, making her 87th appearance in a Husky kit. The fifth-year senior also ranks in the top-10 in both goals and assists, sitting in 4th in assists with 22 and fifth in goals with 24.
 
NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
True freshman Kelsey Branson has scored in back-to-back matches and has found the back of the net three times in the last five outings for the Huskies. The San Diego, California, native has needed just eight shots total to put away her three goals.
 
WHAT'S GOOD HOLMES?
After scoring an 87th minute game winner against Utah and dishing out an assist against Colorado, graduate student defender Shae Holmes was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week. With the honor, Holmes becomes the first Husky to earn a weekly award from the conference since Olivia Sekany in 2020 and the first Washington player to earn Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week laurels since 2017.
 
For her efforts, Holmes was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week, while Summer Yates earned Honorable Mention laurels.

IT TAKES A VILLAGE
Washington's 33 assists are good for the ninth most in the nation and third most in the Pac-12. The Huskies have recorded at least one assist on 22 of their 31 goals on the season, including multiple helpers 11 times.

POLL POSITION
Washington is ranked No. 24 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com rankings, also coming in at No. 23 in the College Soccer News Poll. The Huskies are receiving 11 votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll.

THE DAWG HOUSE
The Huskies are a perfect 6-0 this season in Seattle, outscoring opponents 21-4 at Husky Soccer Stadium.

KICKING MS WITH CLAUDIA
On Tuesday, the Washington Soccer team participated in Kicking MS with Claudia, hosted during Issaquah High School's varsity girl's soccer match against Redmond High School.
 
The fundraising event honored IHS alum and current Husky player Claudia Longo, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis during her senior year of high school. All funds raised benefited the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
 
On the night of the game, the IHS team wore orange socks to show their support of Claudia. During the evening, Issaquah High School volunteers sold commemorative t-shirts and bracelets to raise funds, with members of the Husky program volunteering to collect donations.

SPREADING THE WEALTH
Washington's scoring output has come from up and down its roster, with 13 different Huskies scoring a goal. Kyla Ferry, Hailey Still, Karlee Stueckle and Summer Yates are all tied for the team lead with four goals. The Huskies rank fourth in the Pac-12 with 30 goals despite being one of just four teams in the league without a player with at least five goals scored.
