Arizona Track & Field Travels to California for Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT, Calif. – For the first time this outdoor season, Arizona Track & Field will compete away from home at the Mt. SAC Relays from Wednesday, April 17 to Saturday, April 20. The highly competitive meet will feature many of the top ranked teams in the nation and will be held in Walnut, Calif., at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
 
The meet kicks off on Wednesday with multi's events; however, no Wildcats will be competing in the heptathlon or decathlon this week, so Arizona will first be in action on Thursday. Thursday's field events begin at 10:00 a.m. MST and track events begin at 5:00 p.m. MST. The bulk of the events will be contested on Friday and Saturday, with Friday's field events starting at 9:00 a.m. MST and track events starting at 11:00 a.m. MST. Saturday's events begin at 9:00 a.m. MST, alternating between high school, collegiate, and elite heats. "The Mt. SAC Relays is the unofficial start of championship season in our sport," said Head Coach Fred Harvey. "It has been one of the premier events in the world since 1948. We've had great early season success, and now it's time to take the next step, against the best. We are up for the task."
 
The Wildcats were last in action at home for the Jim Click Shootout and Multi's. At the two-day competition, Arizona won eight events: Jade Brown in the 100m, Pierce LaCoste in the long jump, Jared O'Riley in the javelin, Cooper Quigley in the 1500m, Ian Sanchez Lopez in the 3000m, Tyson Tippett in the 100m, Yan Vazquez in the 400m hurdles, and the men's 4x100m team in the 4x100m relay.
 
The Wildcats also saw six athletes move up in Arizona's all-time top 10 lists, with Pierce LaCoste and Reinaldo Rodrigues leading the way. The two finished first and second in the long jump with personal best leaps of 26-2.25 (7.98m) which are tied for fourth all-time in school history. Other movement in the record books came from Olivia Dillon (seventh all-time in the pole vault), McKenna Watson (seventh all-time in the 100m), Hollan Powers (ninth all-time in the heptathlon), and Sydnie Vanek (ninth all-time in the long jump).
 
In total, 17 Wildcats have moved up in the record books this season. That includes Trayvion White-Austin's school record time of 10.14 in the 100m, which came at the Willie Williams Classic and broke Michael Bates' 33-year-old record. Additionally, freshman sprinter Jade Brown broke the freshman record in the 100m with a time of 11.53 which also came at the Willie Williams Classic.
 
Entering the week, Arizona has 10 competitors ranked in the top 25 nationally. Impressively, three long jumpers rank in the top seven, with Pierce LaCoste, Reinaldo Rodrigues, and Sir Jonathan Sims ranking fifth, sixth, and seventh, respectively. Additionally, Jenica Bosko and Emma Gates both rank 13th in the long jump and high jump. Other rankings include Trayvion White-Austin 15th in the 100m, Hollan Powers 20th in the heptathlon, the men's 4x100m relay team 20th in the 4x100m, Antonia Sanchez Nunez 24th in the 400m hurdles, and Tapenisa Havea 25th in the shot put.
 
In the Pac-12, Bosko leads the conference in the long jump, Gates leads the conference in the high jump, and LaCoste and Rodrigues are tied for second in the long jump. Additionally, Havea ranks third in the shot put, Jared O'Riley ranks third in the javelin, Powers ranks third in the heptathlon, Sanchez Nunez ranks third in the 400m hurdles, Sims ranks third in the triple jump, Sydnie Vanek ranks third in the long jump, Yan Vazquez ranks third in the 400m hurdles, White-Austin ranks third in the 100m, and the men's 4x100m relay ranks third in the 4x100m.
 
Entering the competition, the Arizona Men rank 25th in the nation in the USTFCCCA's Track & Field Rating Index. In the West Region, the men rank fourth and the women rank sixth. Additionally, in the USTFCCCA's Event Squad Rankings, Arizona's women's long jump squad ranks second and the women's 400m hurdles group ranks third. Other event squads ranked in the top 25 include men's long jump (fifth), men's 100m (11th), men's 200m (16th), women's 400m (16th), men's 400m (21st), and women's high jump (21st).
